Established in 1980, Grass Root Garden Company is a family-owned business nested in the mountains of Waynesville, NC holding decades worth of experience, gardening expertise, and a carefully curated selection of plant material.

Originally founded and owned by brothers Brian and Craig Artley, the two brothers grew the business into one of the most respected garden centers in WNC and beyond, built on a foundation of years of professional experience and a passion for tending to the natural world. In 2022, after deciding to retire, the Artley family entrusted their beloved business to another local family—the Yarrington’s.

Through hours of conversation, teaching the trade, and passing along their knowledge, the two brothers have continuously collaborated with the current owners, Brett and Rhonda, being a constant resource and support. We are committed to carrying on the legacy of Brian and Craig, bringing you the same quality of support, gardening know-how, and customer service this local business has been providing for decades. 

Our offerings include a wide variety of perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs, conifers, natives. vegetables and herbs, houseplants and succulents, soil amendments, bug drugs and farmacy, and more—as well as education, experience, and community events.  

We are committed to sourcing plant material from family-owned and operated growers in both NC and beyond, curating a selection of plants well-suited for our zone.
